Nov. 15 -- In
Sunday's New York Post Books section, Michael Gross takes on Tom Ford
and his new $125 book from Rizzoli, which has been fawned over by
fashion folk. Calling the book an "elegant doorstop," Gross writes,
"Ford is billed as a font of provocation. Yet the only shocking thing
about this superficially fabulous book is how deeply unoriginal it
feels." (2nd review on page)...[NYP]
Nov. 12 -- U.S. News & World Report just released its extremely popular Best Colleges Index for 2005
(our alma mater, Bennington, clocks in at a lowly #96 on the Liberal
Arts chart). But it's not too popular with novelist Tom Wolfe.
In his new book "I Am Charlotte Simmons", Wolfe attacks the mag's Index in no uncertain terms (in the voice of his "Dupont" college president):
"[W]hat a stupid joke! Here is this
third-rate news weekly, aimed at buinessmen who don't like to read,
trying desperately to move up in the race but forever swallowing the
dust of Time and Newsweek, and some character dreams up a circulation
gimmick: Let's rank the colleges. Let's stir up a fuss. Pretty soon all
of American higher education is jumping through hoops to meet the
standards of the marketing department of a miserable, lowbrow magazine
out of Washington, D.C.!" (p. 514)
